What is the TRAGER® Approach? by Tracey Eno, Certified Trager® Practitioner, Maryland State Licensed Massage Therapist May 7, 2012. The TRAGER Approach teaches us a lighter, more relaxed way of being. Tension patterns may develop through poor posture, injury, illness, hereditary factors, physical and/or emotional trauma, and the stress of daily living. This hands-on method uses gentle rocking, stretching, and compression to help the body/mind relax and unwind. The TRAGER Approach is a pleasurable, gentle and effective technique that facilitates deep relaxation, increased physical mobility, and mental clarity. No force is used, and it is performed within the client's pain-free range. People are often surprised that something so pleasant elicits such dramatic change. The benefits of a TRAGER session are long-lasting and cumulative, with subsequent sessions allowing for deeper and longer lasting changes. How does it work? Holding stress in the body is a learned response pattern that can be unlearned. Dr. Trager believed, "Nothing can change until the old pattern is broken." TRAGER work is unique because the client is taught simple self-care movements, called 'Mentastics®' (a coined term meaning 'mental gymnastics'). MENTASTICS movements are used to integrate and sustain the feelings of relaxation and freedom found during a session. This promotes lightness and improved posture between sessions. MENTASTICS instruction blends visualization and simple, fun body movements to create feelings of increased ease, freedom, and fluidity. New and healthier patterns can be learned. Rather than masking the symptoms, TRAGER seeks to address the source of imbalance and create lasting change. Who can benefit? The TRAGER Approach can be effective for a wide range of conditions including: fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, lupus, MS, Parkinson's, stress, limited movement, headaches/migraines, poor posture, physical or emotional trauma, sports or other injuries and back, neck or other muscular pain. Because of the very gentle nature of this approach, it is excellent for seniors and for those who cannot tolerate deep work. Each session is tailored to meet the client's needs, based on their goals and health history. To really get it, you have to get it. The TRAGER Approach is about increasing awareness of your body; describing this feeling (or the technique) is not always easy. Milton TRAGER said: "Not until we experience it, is it more than just words. After we experience it, there is no need for words. The value of words is to stimulate the desire to experience." This is the feedback that I got on my recent trip to teach an intensive tai chi weekend in Arlington, Virginia: "If you haven’t had the chance to study tai chi with Sherry Kent, we, the tai chi teaching team of Northern Virginia, highly recommend it.
